The Nigerian government has announced a new increase in the cost of international passports. The announcement was made on Thursday, 28 August 2025, in an official statement.
Details of the Increase
- The increment affects both five-year and ten-year validity passports, as well as the 32-page and 64-page options.
- Beginning 1 September 2025, the new fees will be:
- ₦100,000 for a 32-page passport with five-year validity
- ₦200,000 for a 64-page passport with ten-year validity
This adjustment applies only to passport applications made within Nigeria.
For Nigerians abroad, the fees remain unchanged:
- $150 for a 32-page passport (five-year validity)
- $230 for a 64-page passport (ten-year validity)
Background
In September 2024, the 32-page passport with five-year validity was increased from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, while the 64-page passport with ten-year validity rose from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000. The latest increment now doubles those costs.
Official Statement
Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) spokesperson, ACI AS Akinlabi, confirmed that the new fees will take effect from 1 September 2025. He explained that the upward review was necessary to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport.
“In a bid to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service hereby announces an upward review of Nigerian Standard Passport fees,” he said.
The NIS added that its commitment is to balance quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services remain accessible to all Nigerians.
Ongoing Reforms
The increase comes at a time when the Immigration Service is undergoing reforms under the current Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
- In June 2023, Acting Comptroller General Adepoju Wuraola promised to address challenges Nigerians face in obtaining passports.
- Minister Tunji-Ojo has emphasized digitizing the passport application process to make it almost fully automated.
- He stated that the target processing time is two weeks, with plans to reduce it further to one week.
According to him, the only reason applicants will need to visit an Immigration office is for biometric data capture. Other processes, including renewals, corrections of names, dates of birth, or personal data, can be completed online.
Past Challenges
Previously, passport applications often took several months to process, with reports of immigration officers allegedly extorting money from applicants to fast-track their documents.
